Gujarati Thepla Recipe

Thepla is a popular Gujarati flatbread made with whole wheat flour and spices, often enjoyed as a snack or meal. It is a great travel food as it stays fresh for a long time.



Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup fenugreek leaves (methi), finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon oil (plus extra for cooking)
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, fenugreek leaves, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, carom seeds, cumin seeds, and salt.
  2. Add yogurt and oil, then mix well.
  3. Gradually add water and knead into a soft, smooth dough.
  4. Cover and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.

Step 2: Roll Out the Thepla

  1. Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a ball.
  2. Dust with flour and roll each ball into a thin, round flatbread.

Step 3: Cook the Thepla

  1. Heat a tawa or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Place a rolled-out thepla on the tawa and cook for 30-40 seconds.
  3. Flip, brush with a little oil, and cook for another 30-40 seconds.
  4. Flip again, press lightly, and cook until golden brown spots appear.
  5. Repeat for all theplas.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Serve hot with yogurt, pickle, or chutney.
  2. Enjoy your flavorful Thepla!

Tips for Perfect Thepla

  1. For Softer Theplas: Add a little milk while kneading the dough.
  2. For Extra Flavor: Add sesame seeds or grated bottle gourd to the dough.
  3. For Travel-Friendly Theplas: Use extra oil while cooking to keep them fresh longer.
