Tortilla Calzone

Tortilla Calzone

A quick and delicious twist on a classic calzone, this Tortilla Calzone uses a tortilla wrap instead of pizza dough, making it a lighter and faster alternative while still packing all the cheesy goodness!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large flour tortilla
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup cooked and crumbled sausage, pepperoni, or veggies of choice
  • 2 tablespoons pizza sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter (for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) or heat a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Lightly grease a baking sheet or prepare a skillet with a drizzle of olive oil.

Step 2: Assemble the Calzone

  1. Lay the tortilla flat on a clean surface.
  2. Spread pizza sauce on half of the tortilla, leaving a small border.
  3. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.
  4. Add ricotta cheese in small dollops over the mozzarella.
  5. Top with sausage, pepperoni, or veggies of choice.
  6. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and garlic powder.

Step 3: Fold and Seal

  1. Fold the tortilla in half over the filling, creating a half-moon shape.
  2. Press the edges firmly to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a better seal.

Step 4: Cook the Calzone

Oven Method:

  1. Place the tortilla calzone on the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Brush the top with olive oil or melted butter.
  3. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top (if using).
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Skillet Method:

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the tortilla calzone in it.
  2. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until crispy and golden brown.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Let it cool slightly before slicing.
  2. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping.

Tips for the Best Tortilla Calzone

  1. Use a Large Tortilla: A burrito-sized tortilla works best to hold all the filling.
  2. Don’t Overfill: Too much filling can make sealing difficult and cause leakage.
  3. Try Different Fillings: Experiment with spinach, mushrooms, grilled chicken, or even a BBQ-style filling.
  4. Use a Press or Weight: When cooking in a skillet, press down with a spatula for a crispy finish.
