Dal Dhokli is a traditional Gujarati one-pot meal made with spiced wheat flour dumplings simmered in a flavorful lentil-based curry. It is a wholesome and comforting dish.

Ingredients

For the Dal:

  • 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon jaggery (or sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves (for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts (optional)

For the Dhokli:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • Water, as needed (for kneading dough)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dal

  1. Rinse toor dal under running water.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add dal, water, turmeric powder, and chopped tomato.
  3. Cook for 3-4 whistles until the dal is soft and mushy.
  4. Mash the dal well and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Dhokli Dough

  1. In a bowl, mix whole wheat flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, carom seeds, and salt.
  2. Add oil and mix well.
  3. Gradually add water and knead into a firm yet soft dough.
  4. Roll out the dough and cut into small diamond or square-shaped pieces.

Step 3: Cook the Dal Dhokli

  1. Heat ghee or oil in a pan.
  2. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and green chili. Sauté for a few seconds.
  3. Pour the mashed dal into the tempering.
  4. Add jaggery, tamarind pulp, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt.
  5. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Slowly drop in the dhokli pieces one by one while stirring gently.
  7. Cook for 10-12 minutes until the dhokli softens and absorbs the flavors.
  8. If using, add roasted peanuts for extra crunch.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  2. Serve hot with a drizzle of ghee.
