Ingredients
For the Dal:
- 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
- 3 cups water
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

For the Dhokli:
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon oil
- Water, as needed (for kneading dough)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dal
- Rinse toor dal under running water.
- In a pressure cooker, add dal, water, turmeric powder, and chopped tomato.
- Cook for 3-4 whistles until the dal is soft and mushy.
- Mash the dal well and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Dhokli Dough
- In a bowl, mix whole wheat flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, carom seeds, and salt.
- Add oil and mix well.
- Gradually add water and knead into a firm yet soft dough.
- Roll out the dough and cut into small diamond or square-shaped pieces.
Step 3: Cook the Dal Dhokli
- Heat ghee or oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and green chili. Sauté for a few seconds.
- Pour the mashed dal into the tempering.
- Add jaggery, tamarind pulp, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt.
- Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
- Slowly drop in the dhokli pieces one by one while stirring gently.
- Cook for 10-12 minutes until the dhokli softens and absorbs the flavors.
- If using, add roasted peanuts for extra crunch.
Step 4: Serve
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with a drizzle of ghee.
